In this post I will tell you about some of the best European cities to travel to if you’re a big foodie traveler (like me!). Some of these places I’ve been to and have had the best meals ever and others have top reviews.

Let’s dive into the list!

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam may not be the first city that comes to mind for the foodie traveler, but it’s home to a diverse culinary scene with influences from around the world. Some of my favorites include the stroopwafels and of course the french fries with all of the yummy toppings!
During one of our morning walks, we stumbled across a restaurant called Lagom Amsterdam that had the BEST shakshuka. The aesthetics of the restaurant were super cute as well. Definitely try to make it there if you go!

Lisbon, Portugal

Another foodie traveler spot that I love is Lisbon! Lisbon has emerged as a hot spot for foodies, with its fresh seafood, hearty stews, and pastéis de nata (custard tarts, and I could eat a million!)

And you can’t forget to pair the fantastic food with Portuguese wine, which I think is some of the best in Europe. Give this coastal city a visit and I’m sure you’ll be in for a treat (or two!)

Florence, Italy

This city actually surprised me with how great the food was. Of course, Italy on a foodie traveling list is a given but Florence in particular stood out to me.

I’ll never forget the crab gnocchi that I had (literally 6 years ago) and I would recommend it to anyone who’s going to Italy. This city is also Famous for its Tuscan cuisine, Florence is a paradise for food lovers with its fresh pasta, artisanal cheeses, and Chianti wine.

Lyon, France

Although I enjoyed everything I ate in Paris, the city of love still doesn’t have the foodie reputation that Lyon has. Lyon boasts a rich culinary heritage and a vibrant food scene that attracts visitors from around the world.

Lyon’s reputation as the “Capital of Gastronomy” is well-deserved, thanks to its rich culinary traditions, world-renowned chefs, and diverse dining scene. Whether you’re indulging in a bouchon or dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant, Lyon offers a culinary experience that is 100% unparalleled!

San Sebastian, Spain

Located in the Basque Country (northern Spain), San Sebastian is a culinary hotspot known for its pintxos, the Basque version of tapas. The city boasts numerous Michelin-starred restaurants, traditional cider houses, and bustling food markets.

I’ve never been a fan of most traditional Spanish cuisine (even though I spend so much time there), but I will say my best meals were in the north! The best part is that you can have some of the most exquisite food for a crazy low price!

Greece (Athens or any island)

If you’re a seafood foodie, like myself Greece will be one of your yummiest traveling experiences ever!

Athens and all of the Greek islands offer a taste of the country’s diverse culinary traditions, from the fresh seafood and vibrant flavors of Santorini to the rustic charm and farm-fresh ingredients of Naxos. Whether you’re exploring the winding streets of Mykonos Town or savoring the local specialties of Crete, each island promises a delicious and unforgettable food experience.

Istanbul, Turkey

Turkey is a country I am absolutely dying to go to so my recommendation is only based on the recommendation of others. Istanbul’s culinary heritage is a melting pot of flavors influenced by Byzantine, Ottoman, and Mediterranean cuisines.

The city’s street food scene is also supposed to be legendary, with vendors selling kebabs, börek (savory pastries), and Turkish delight. Istanbul’s meyhane (taverns) offer an authentic taste of Turkish meze (appetizers) and rakı (anise-flavored spirit).
