Best For: Eco-Friendly Dining 🍽 (ios and Android)

I used HappyCow religiously when I was a vegetarian living in Spain years ago and it’s still the best app eco-friendly dining. This app makes it super easy to find vegan or vegetarian restaurants all over the world. Not only does it include vegan/vegetarian resautrants it also lists restaurants that has veg options so that you can dine with your non-veg friends! It includes reviews from real customers reviewing which places are the best and what to avoid.

FairTrip

Best For: Supporting Local 🏘 (ios and Google Play)

FairTrip is a free collaborative app is a travel guide for those seeking local and authentic places when they’re out of the country. With more than 3000 homestays, local restaurants and authentic experiences, this app will take you off the beaten path. It’s important to support these local economies that may not see the same financial support as more touristy locations. With increasing tourism many places experience an inrease in prices, making it hard to keep businesses afloat. Sustainable travel apps like FairTrip make it super simple to travel responsibly and ethically.

CityMapper

Best For: Public Transportation 🚇

Citymapper is a personal favorite of mine that I actually use when I’m at home and abroad. CityMapper is the best app for getting around with public transportation. It makes is super easy to understand transit systems whereever you are in the world so that you don’t have to rely on using private cars.

I love this app because it considers little things like telling which exit to use in the subway to get closest to your desitnation or automatically choosing the right map for you based on your location. It’s much better than using Google Maps and seems to show more details on the best transit options to use.

Commons: Sustainable Spending

Best For: Buying Travel Essentials 🛍

Commons is an app that you can use before you travel to find sustainable and trustworth brands of clothing, beauty and more. Conversely this app promotes deconsumption so you make sure that you’re buying the things you truly need and will last a long time.

The app has carbon experts that have rated thousands of brands making it easy to trust that you’re making the right decision.

BlaBlaCar

Best For: Shared Car Services 🚗

I’ve used BlaBlaCar once when living in Spain and this is not only a great sustainable travel app, but it is also a great option for budget travlers. BlaBlaCar allows for people to connect with someone with a car who’s already driving a certain direction. For example, my roommate and I wanted to go from Madrid to Valencia for a weekend at the beach (which in hindsight I have no idea why we didn’t just take a train) but we found a couple on BlaBlaCar that was already heading that way and paid them for a ride. It allows for a more comfortable journey compared to a bus ride (like Madrid to Lisbon, it’s insane that there’s no train between these two cities yet).
