Chynna SymoneA few years ago I had the opportunity of a lifetime to live and work in Madrid, Spain and before that I did a short study abroad program in Sevilla. These experiences allowed me the chance to travel all over the country and discover all of the hidden gems in Spain.
I spent about half a year in Spain and every weekend my friends and I would either travel to another country or, more frequently, we’d explore Spain. It’s a beautiful country with so many hidden gems.
Barcelona, Madrid, Sevilla, and Ibiza are all fantastic places to go, but let me put you on to some other gorgeous locals in the country:
DISCLAIMER: Some of these cities are very well known by locals, UK tourists, and other Europeans, however, I’m writing this list specifically for Americans who only know about Barcelona and Madrid!
1. Benidorm
Benidorm, often overlooked by Americans and non-European travelers in favor of its more famous counterparts, is a vibrant and exciting destination that holds tons of attractions and activities for any age.
This city has amazing beaches and a thriving nightlife that attracts locals from all over. Located on the eastern side of Spain, south of Barcelona, this city is known for its beaches, nightlife, and historical old town.
This city is perfect for a girls’ trip looking to party or for families seeking endless activities.
2. Valencia
This may not be one of the hidden gems in Spain for locals however, Valencia offers a perfect blend of rich history, stunning architecture, delicious cuisine, and vibrant culture. You can wander through the picturesque Old Town, where you’ll find the magnificent Valencia Cathedral and the bustling Central Market, brimming with fresh produce and local delicacies.
During my time in Valencia, I got to visit the City of Arts and Sciences, the complex of arts and sciences that hosts a science museum, an oceanarium, and a performing arts center. Each building is meant to represent different shapes, for example, the IMAX theatre is shaped like an eye and the science museum is the shape of a whale’s skeleton.
One of the cool things about this complex is that clubbing events are hosted inside! And I was able to go and it was such an awesome experience to dance outside under this gorgeous architecture!
3. Marbella & Malaga
I combined these two because they are easily accessible from one another. There’s always debate over which of these southern Spanish cities are best to visit however my advice is to do both! Stay in Malaga since you’re likely to find a cheaper hotel, but then do the day trip to Marbella.
Southern cities in Spain, especially Malaga, have a rich history and fantastic museums which are majorly influenced by Arab culture. The city also boasts incredible nightlife and beaches.
However, if you want a luxurious experience consider a day trip to Marbella. Indulge in the glitz and glamour of Puerto Banús, where you can admire luxury yachts, shop at designer boutiques, and enjoy world-class dining. Relax on the pristine beaches, such as Playa de la Fontanilla or Nikki Beach, soaking up the Mediterranean sun.
4. Donostia San Sebastian
One thing that I have found is that tourists, particularly from the Americas, overlook the north of Spain. However, Donostia San Sebastian is one of the most beautiful coastal cities I’ve ever seen and truly one of the best hidden gems in Spain. La Concha Beach, with its perfect sand and crystal blue water, is known as one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Europe.Â
If you’re in the north of Spain your priority should be to eat! The gastronomy in this area is phenomenal and you can get the perfect pintxos (pronounced pinchos) literally at any restaurant!
However, if you’d like to do an activity too, a cool experience here is to take a ride on the antique funicular to the top of Monte Igueldo, where you can enjoy stunning views and visit the amusement park.
5. Tarragona
Located an hour north of Barcelona, this is one of my favorite hidden gems in Spain and has been on my list for a while. Tarragona has amazing historical architecture, specifically the Roman Ruins of Tarraco. And of course a beautifully sandy beach steps away from the city center.
This is a great city to visit if you’re staying in Barcelona and would like to add on another city or are interested in staying in a more affordable part of the country.
