If you’re looking for the ultimate travel guide in Portugal, here’s the post for you! Whether it’s with your best girl friends, your study abroad roommate,, your partner or family this guide will outline the best ways to maximize a short stay and still see Lisbon, Sintra and more!

Lisbon

Whether you’re flying in or taking a 10 hour overnight bus from Madrid like I did (which I only recommend to my budget travelers) definitely start your day with at a coffee  and pastry at any of the local cafes. Later you can take a visit via the transit system to BelĂ©m, known for its iconic landmarks such as BelĂ©m Tower, JerĂłnimos Monastery, and the Monument to the Discoveries. It’s super close to the center of the city (30-40 mins away). Don’t forget to try the famous pastĂ©is de nata (custard tarts) at PastĂ©is de BelĂ©m.

Once you’re back at the center of the city explore the historic neighborhoods of Lisbon, such as Alfama, Baixa, and Chiado. Take a tram ride on Tram 28 for a scenic tour through the winding streets.

Later in the evening, experience Lisbon’s vibrant nightlife in the Bairro Alto district. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and then explore the lively bars and Fado houses.

Sintra Day Trip

My favorite part of my trip to Portugal and something that should be part of any travel guide is a day trip to Sintra!

Take an early train from Lisbon to Sintra (about 40 minutes). Once in Sintra, visit the colorful Pena Palace, perched atop a hill with panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Explore the enchanting Quinta da Regaleira, with its mysterious gardens, tunnels, and initiation wells. Don’t miss the Moorish Castle, another impressive fortress with stunning views.

I recommend lunch at Cafe Saudade, which had the yummiest sandwiches!

Return to Lisbon in the evening and relax with dinner at a local restaurant or cafe.

Cascais & Estoril Day Trip

Take a train from Lisbon to Cascais (about 30 minutes). Explore the charming seaside town, visit the Boca do Inferno (Hell’s Mouth) rock formation, and relax on the beach.

Walk along the scenic promenade from Cascais to Estoril, known for its glamorous casino and beautiful gardens.

Return to Lisbon and spend your last evening exploring any parts of the city you may have missed or revisit your favorite spots.

Bonus Trip to Faro

If you can spend a night in the south of Portugal, do everything you can to make it happen!

You’ll take an early train from Lisbon to Faro (about 2.5 hrs) and then Begin your day by exploring Faro’s historic center, including landmarks like the SĂ© Cathedral and the Old Town walls. Enjoy wandering through the cobbled streets and soaking in the atmosphere of this charming city.

Head to the marina and embark on a boat tour to Benagil Cave. Along the way, you’ll cruise past stunning coastline scenery, sea caves, and rock formations. Once at Benagil Cave, marvel at its iconic natural beauty, with sunlight streaming through the roof opening.

After your boat tour, enjoy a seafood lunch at a restaurant overlooking the marina or along the waterfront. Sample fresh fish and seafood dishes, accompanied by local specialties like grilled octopus or seafood rice.

Return to Faro and spend the afternoon exploring more of the city’s cultural attractions. Visit the Municipal Museum of Faro to learn about the region’s history and heritage, or take a leisurely stroll through the picturesque Old Town.

As the day winds down, relax at a waterfront cafe or bar, sipping on refreshing cocktails or enjoying a glass of Portuguese wine. Take in the sunset views over the marina before heading to dinner.

Hopefully ultimate long weekend travel guide has sparked your interest in a trip to Portugal or gave you a few ideas of awesome things to do in this beautiful country. From Sintra to Faro this is the perfect vacation destination!
